LIVESTRONG at the YMCA can help. In 2008, the YMCA partnered with the LIVESTRONG®Foundation to help cancer survivors begin the journey toward recovery with the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program. As part of the Y’s commitment to strengthening community through healthy living, this program offers adults affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person. At the Loran Smith Center for Cancer Support, we recognize the need to support and treat the patient and family – not just the disease. Because cancer treatment involves more than medical care, free services and programs such as yoga, tai chi, nutrition classes, expressive art classes, complementary therapies (oncology massage, Healing Touch, and Reiki), and counseling are also available to anyone affected by cancer at any phase in his or her journey, regardless of whether or not they are a Piedmont patient.

We are physicians board-certified in rehabilitation medicine who care for patients with cancer. We see patients any time after their cancer diagnosis. We can help you prepare for upcoming chemotherapy, surgery and radiation. We can help you recover from neurologic and musculoskeletal aftereffects of these treatments. Based on your goals, we will work together to develop a personalized rehabilitation plan. The plan may include a personalized therapy prescription, exercise prescription, medications, injections to treat pain, and assistive devices for mobility. Conditions we treat: Muscle spasms, joint pain or stiffness, numbness, tingling; lymphedema; fatigue; pelvic pain; bowel, bladder control; balance, mobility changes; reduced strength and endurance. provides volunteer cancer survivors and professional staff members who offer insight and compassion to others on their cancer journey. The center offers information, education and emotional and spiritual support to cancer patients and their families in North Georgia. It serves as a resource for patients before, during and after cancer treatment by providing support groups, individual and family counseling and an educational resource library. Workshops, seminars, and individual classes are offered that address physical side effects of cancer treatment, psychosocial issues, spiritual concerns, complementary therapies and grief issues related to the death of a loved one. Endowed by the Athens Regional Foundation, all of the Center's services are available free of charge.
