GASCO Honored with Grant from the Conquer Cancer Foundation to Assist Implementation of 2012 Commission on Cancer’s Survivorship Care Standards

Atlanta, GA — The Conquer Cancer Foundation of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) announced today that the Georgia Society of Clinical Oncology (“GASCO”) is the recipient of a $10,000 grant to begin a project intended to “Create a Survivorship Program Toolbox to Assist Implementation of the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer's 2012 Standard 3.3: Survivorship Care Plans Across Diverse Communities.” GASCO, a state affiliate of ASCO, will be recognized at the State Affiliates’ Reception, being held on June 3 2012 at ASCO’s 48th Annual Meeting in Chicago. GASCO is the professional organization of cancer care specialists in Georgia with affiliate members representing non-physician cancer care providers, practice administration and the newly formed Cancer Patient Navigators of Georgia. “The Conquer Cancer Foundation and ASCO applaud GASCO for expanding the work of their organization to help patients living with cancer in Georgia,” said Martin J. Murphy, Jr., PhD, DMedSc, chair of the Conquer Cancer Foundation Board of Directors. “The work of oncology state societies is indispensable to patient advocacy work and is a vital resource in helping ASCO address issues facing the cancer community.” ASCO’s State Affiliate Grant Program, created in 2005, provides financial support to State and Regional Affiliates to help them implement specific year-long projects that will ultimately lead to better treatment for the patients they serve. ASCO’s State/Regional Affiliate Program includes 48 state and regional oncology societies that work to improve the quality and delivery of care to patients affected by cancer. ASCO’s State Affiliates are now represented through the newly created State Affiliate Council, which serves as an advisory group to the ASCO Board of Directors. The State Affiliate Grant Program is supported by Bristol-Myers Squibb and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
