Inagural Thomas E. Seay, MD, PhD Lecture Held

On Saturday, September 10th, the inaugural Lectureship Honoring the Leadership, Scholarship and Service of Thomas E. Seay, MD, PhD, (1951-2015) was held during the 2016 GASCO Annual Meeting and Best of ASCO® at the Westin Buckhead, Atlanta. For the keynote address, around 150 oncologists gathered to hear Douglas B. Evans, MD, Donald C. Ausman Family Foundation Professor of Surgery and Chair of the Department of Surgery at The Medical College of Wisconsin, present "Personalized Medicine for Localized Pancreatic Cancer."

Established by the Board of Directors of Georgia CORE, this program was created to honor Dr. Thomas E. Seay, a leading and greatly admired medical oncologist who was President of Atlanta Cancer Care, a member of the medical staff of Northside Hospital, and a founding member and chairman of the Georgia CORE Board. The annual lecture is designed to promote improvements in treatment, research, quality and collaboration in Georgia – each representing an area of great importance to Dr. Seay.
One quote of Dr. Seay’s displays his passion for better cancer care in Georgia. “I have been known to say that there is a bit of an optimist in all oncologists. We have to maintain a positive attitude for our patients and for ourselves. Georgia CORE gives us an outlet for this optimism—a way to build infrastructure and collaboration to advance discovery, and an opportunity to expand access to cutting edge treatments. Ultimately, we are all seeking the same success in new cures for cancer.”
The lunchtime presentation began with a welcome from Georgia CORE President Nancy Paris, MS, FACHE. After a southern buffet was served that was reminiscent of Dr. Seay’s roots, Patti Owen, MN, RN, Director of Northside Hospital Cancer Institute and H.A. Zaren, MD, FACS, Oncologist at the Nancy N. and J.C. Lewis Cancer and Research Pavilion at St. Joseph’s/Candler discussed the impact of Dr. Seay’s legacy and introduced Dr. Evans.
